'The Great Book of Gaelic'                           back >

The 100 Gaelic poems were nominated by writers such as
Seamus Heaney, Hamish Henderson and Alastair Macleod as well
as the contributing poets themselves. Their selection features work
from the 6th century to the 21st and includes the earliest
Gaelic poetry in existence. Comedy, tragedy, love, death, the
spiritual and the bawdy are all represented.

100 visual artists, fifty from each country, were commissioned to
respond to the poetry in a variety of media. A small team of
calligraphers, led by Frances Breen, worked with the artists to
integrate the key lines of poetry into the artworks.

An Leabhar Mhor, or the Great Book of Gaelic, is also the
subject of a film for BBC and RTE television, a radio series, an
education pack, a website and an events programme. When the
exhibition has concluded its 5 year international tour the individual
artworks will be bound together into one volume to form
a permanent exhibit.
